Artifact No.47 - Wooden Cobra
There is not much information I can give about this wooded cobra. We found it at a local thrift shop, and there is nothing on the item that would provide any identifying details. It is approximately 16 cm tall and 12 cm wide. This cobra in particular was found with cobwebs on it and a few minor signs of wear and tear, but otherwise it is in remarkably good shape. Even its wooden teeth are still all in place.
The information I was able to find online suggests it was likely hand-carved in Bali, and it was made out of jempinis wood, which is a hardwood from Southeast Asia.
Cobras are often associated with spiritual awakening, and in Balinese culture, the cobra is seen as a symbol of transformation and protection. Across Africa and Asia, the cobra is seen as a semi-divine supernatural being with a connection to the afterlife. Specifically, in Zulu mythology, ancestral spirits would take the form of the cobra and appear to bring messages from the dead. Additionally, many African cultures have associated cobras with sorcerers and witchdoctors.
The cobra would make a great addition to an altar or an apothecary cabinet. It may even help you connect with spirits from the beyond. Whatever drew you to stop and look at this cobra, we know it is the right cobra for you.
