Artifact No.33 - Aztec Jaguar Warrior Statue
The figure itself is about 3 and a half inches tall and the base appears to be made of stone - possibly onyx. It is a little weighty and is also adorned with other stones and clay sculpture. The sculpture itself depicts a human figure sitting cross legged holding a bowl on one leg, and a holding a blue stone in the other hand. He is wearing a headdress styled after a jaguar with a halo of green feathers around it.
Jaguar warriors were members of Aztec society’s warrior elite. The were often employed at the battlefronts in war, and used to capture prisoners for sacrifice to Aztec gods.
We found it a little while ago in one of our local goodwill thrift shops here in Edmonton, quite a long way from this figurine’s original home. Our recent vacation to Mexico City reminded me this was in our collection which is why I bring it out today.
We can’t promise they will bring you anyone to sacrifice to strange ancient gods, but he will look good on your shelf whatever he chooses to do.
